If
you suspect that your child may have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADD/ADHD), an associated learning disability, or a mental
health concern ranging from anxiety to a severe mood disorder, you will
certainly have many questions. Receiving actual diagnoses, learning
the causes for your child's difficulties in school or in social or family
relationships, can bring relief. However they can also bring confusion
about what the various diagnoses really mean for your child and your
family. They may even lead to the distress often associated with learning
one has an identified medical condition. Regardless of your reaction,
you will need adequate time to have your questions answered.
First,
know that you are not alone. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavioral
disorder in North America, and is also the most studied childhood psychiatric
disorder. With appropriate treatment, many children with ADHD overcome
the challenges presented by the disorder. There are a variety of treatments
such as behavioral therapy, counseling and/or medication available to
help manage manage this condition.
Second,
know that there is much controversy today about what is AD/HD vs. what
is a mood disorder. How are they different and how are they alike? What
about having a combination of learning issues and mental health issues?
These are the questions being studied every day by the Affinity Center
Clinical Team.
